Dr. Christiaan Boerma is a senior consultant Intensive Care in the Medical Centre Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, as well as a research coordinator of the Department of Translational Physiology , Academic Medical Centre Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His primary field of interest is hemodynamics in sepsis and other shock states. He has published a body of scientific papers and books on traditional macro-hemodynamic monitoring in combination with in-vivo microscopy of the microcirculation. Over the last years he has studied the potential to guide fluid and catecholamine resuscitation by microcirculation-derived endpoints and to use these as a tool in clinical practise. This interest is not restricted to the technical aspects of hemodynamic monitoring, but also includes the human behaviour involved in critical care decisionmaking.
